The MV Klassen was built in Hamburg Germany in 1961 and was originally named the Sigrid K. She was used for local trade in Europe until the early 1970’s when she was then brought to the West Coast of Canada to be used for hauling explosives supplying the logging industry. .
In the early 1980’s she went through extensive refits including repowering of the Main Engine, Gensets and automating the engine room. Shortly after the refits were completed the vessel was tied up due to changes in the logging industry and the Vessels owners using alternate delivery methods for the explosives. She sat in the fresh water of the North Arm of the Fraser River in Vancouver, BC, Canada for a number of years waiting for the owners to decide her future.
In the 1990’s she was purchased by a group of businessman and they invested large amounts of money updating electronics, machinery, engine room alarm systems and crew accommodations. After a number of years of refits and a large sum of money invested the vessel was ready to sail once again. The Klassen was scheduled to sail to Central America to deliver freight in that area but before the Klassen left Vancouver the owners were charged with illegal activities and The Klassen was one of their assets seized. The Canadian Government then held the Klassen until 2000 and that is when the current owners Gemini Marine purchased the vessel.
After buying the vessel Gemini spent two years updating the vessel for the Canadian commercial trade and it took two years finding a contract for her in Canadian waters. The vessel has been working part time (8-10 days per month) since 2004 and is under current contract until May 2008. This vessel has seen very little commercial usage in the last 30 years with constant maintenance and upgrades and currently has only approx 8000 hours on the main engine since it was installed.
After viewing the MV Klassen you will agree that this is a one of a kind vessel in incredible condition for her age. She is ready to sail either as a commercial vessel or a unique Super Yacht. She meets or exceeds Transport Canada Commercial shipping requirements and is available to be viewed.
